Well, to be honest, I didn't expect to meet anyone here either. So, we're pretty even on that front, I suppose. Luke told me a little about you, but it's nice to actually get to know the woman that's won my brother's heart.

[Leia can't possibly know what a relief it is to be greeted and welcomed so warmly. Ami's quite honestly never had acceptance come that easily before, and acceptance by Luke's family is important.]

Actually, I've seen you before. That is, sort of... [Ami really should have kept her mouth closed there.] but we didn't have a chance to meet.

Oh? We have, have we? [This is very interesting. Please, say more, Ami.]

I think I'd remember if I'd met someone like you, so how have you seen me? I don't think Luke carries around holo-images of his twin sister, does he?

It wasn't anything like that... [This does not lead to Ami saying what it was like, because really, how do you explain that to someone?] It was just a strange situation. Sometimes unusual things happen here.

Shifts, right? Luke told me a bit about them.

[She's noticed that you didn't really answer her, Ami, but she's going to let it drop for now.]

He said that's actually how we get here. Or was it Spock who told me that? I can't remember correctly.

['He was a woman and that means he looked like you and I didn't really mind' is not the sort of thing she can say.]

That's right, it was a shift for awhile. They're unpredictable.

[There's a story there, but Leia's not going to pry. Just yet.]

That's what I'm finding out. However, I was hoping to get to know you. How long have you been here?

I've been here two years, and most of a third. I was here for a year before that, but I was sent home for awhile.

[She delivers this without real trace of what it must mean to someone to have been here that long, and to be aware of how close they had been to freedom for awhile.

It's just factual.]

[Hearing that news delivered in such a to-the-point tone of voice was disheartening. This woman was her brother's fiancée. Why was she resigned to a life so oppressed by unseen entities? There was something that Leia was missing, for sure.]

That's a while to live in a place like this. How do you deal with that?

[The true answer was probably 'very poorly'. The answer she gives is somewhat different, and simple.]

I'm used to it. [After this long here, she'd have to be. It doesn't mean, though, that she isn't still always with an eye out to more opportunities or ways to possibly escape.]

[She nods. Getting used to something isn't the same as giving up completely, but it does leave things completely open for tyrants to have their way. It's how the Empire started, after all.]

Is there something about you that I absolutely must know? What do you do in your spare time? What do you do to fill your days?

I should ask you. [But since Leia is the one who, in fact, asked, Ami answers after that polite disclaimer.]

I like swimming, and chess. [Her two hobbies, and she is very proud of them because they aren't studying. It dawns on her then that Leia has no preconceived notions at all since they've just met. This is a good chance!]

[Hahahaha, Ami, you should get used to the fact that Leia is extremely inquisitive and will ask a lot of questions until she's more sure of herself.]

Swimming is an admirable hobby. Do you get to do that a lot? And I've played holochess, but I guess there isn't a board for that here, is there?

[Nope. Leia doesn't know anything at all about Ami besides what Luke's told her, so you're in the clear. Besides, Leia would admire your studying habit. Intelligent conversation is sometimes really hard to come by for a highly educated person such as herself.]

[One thing at a time! But no, really, the interest is gratifying and Ami can't help warming to it. Leia seems like a genuinely nice person, and that reminds her of someone. She shakes her head.]

There's a set. Luke gave me a holochess set once. If you'd like, we could play sometime, [Learning a new chess variant? Best present ever. Yes, your brother and Ami are hopeless, Leia. But it works for them, and Ami's learned that's what's important.]
